They are only expressed in the intestine of the adult hermaphrodite worm. The proximal 200 bp in the vitellogenin 5' flanks, which have largely diverged from one another, contain two repeated heptameric sequences: 'tgtcaat', which is found as a perfect heptamer at least once, and, allowing a one-base mismatch is found in both orientations four to six times, and 'ctgataa', which is present at least once in a restricted region of each promoter. These two sequence elements may be involved in regulation of the vitellogenin genes. The vitellogenin 6 gene encodes a precursor protein (VIT180) which is cleaved into two small polypeptides (yp115 and yp88). Vit-6 is distantly related to vit-[1-5], which encode two larger yolk proteins. A TATA box is located at positions 462-467.
